the bold dev

I don’t know if I want to give my ADHD all the credit for the laundry list of hobbies I hyper-fixated on then abandoned. I’m sure I can also blame the dopamine rush I get when shopping for new hobbies.

Now, I have a few totes that serve as my hobby graveyard. I don’t sell them because I’m still holding on to the hope that I’ll pick them up at some point. But I’ve also implemented a grace period where I can’t buy any new software or tools for a new project. I can’t keep on filling my graveyard now that I’m more self-aware.

Here are some of the hobbies I’ve picked up through out the years:

Cooking

I like to believe that I’m a decent cook. But in this economy I’m definitely diving more into it. Everything is getting more expensive but I’m not making more money. It’s only logical to get more bang for your buck and buy groceries instead of a single meal for two.

The most recent dishes I made for the first time were pozole, apple sauce, and a peach cobbler. There have been a few disasters, like gooey sopa de fideo. But, you live and you learn, right?

Sewing and Crafts

I have rudimentary sewing skills. If something has a small hole in it, I can probably mend it. It won’t look pretty, but it won’t be ripped anymore.

I did want to pursue embroidery because some designs I’ve seen are so stinking beautiful. I wanted so badly to make one of my own. Sometimes I still think I can start embroidering knits and beanies as a side business. I think those details add the cutest touch.

In my hobby graveyard, there is a cricut buried under a bunch of cricut accessories. I was fascinated with paper crafts. I was convinced they would’ve been a great personalized gift that would make a successful Etsy shop. lol.

The next three hobbies stemmed from my love of technology. And, like my other hobbies, I think my skill levels in these can be described as rudimentary at best.

Coding

This one started in the days of customizing my MySpace page. I just didn’t know it at the time. I did a little refresh recently, when I threw myself into the idea of becoming a software developer. But I still had bills to pay. I found myself a full time job, so coding eventually came to a stop.

Maybe one day I’ll yell YOLO like the millennial I am and pick it back up. Maybe I’ll get my CodeWars streak back and start using GitHub like a pro. I’ll become a world famous website developer know to create beautiful websites. Maybe.

Photography

Who didn’t want to become a photographer at some point in their life? Was that just me? Well, before iPhones were an option to take a decent photo, I would dream of getting a super fancy camera. I did all my research of which brand I wanted to try but I never successfully funded that pipe dream.

For my purposes, my iPhone is a great way to take the photos I want. They’re usually only for social media and for keepsakes. If I need to edit them, I also know my way around some pretty cool editing software.

Unless I find myself venturing into YouTube, I don’t think I’ll have a need to buy a super fancy camera.

Digital Art

Procreate and Illustrator have a choke-hold on me. What people create with these programs is so fascinating to me! I want to be a part of the club so bad! I’ve seen so many tutorials so I know of a bunch of hidden features that most people aren’t aware of.

If I were to pursue a hobby in the name of developing my confidence and my voice, it would be digital art. It’s probably the most attainable since I can use tech I already have.
